Cooling materials
for directional solidification
The foundryman knows out of sorrowful experience the important
meaning of the solidification rate. The solidification rate
influences not only the quantity of the feeding metal ofthe
special part of the casting, but also the structure of the
different kinds of cast irons and different kinds of graphite
(form, size and distribution). with regar to the feeding
it is generell, that with an increasing of the crystallisation
rate the negative shrinkagepressure decreases and the quantity
of the feeding metal rise. In contrast with this, with an
decreasing of the crystallisation rate the porosity increase.
In this case you also have to pay attention to the sensitivity
of feeding for the different alloys.
Not always, above all with complicate constructions, it
is possible to fulfill the conditions for a directional solidification
by feeding. Since a long time it is a standard for the casting
technique to use chills for cooling processes or to cast
in cooling elements for a directional solidification.
The aim of this directional heat flow is:
- the production of an artifical end zone,
- the cooling of thermal centres, thickenings or other
material accumulation to get a better module,
- the oppression or shifting of segregate zones,
- the avoiding of cracks.
Specificly for these field of applications we straigthen
